Newborn

Newborn Photos sessions.  What to expect and tips to get the best out of your session.

How Old?
The best time to photograph your newborn baby is before they are 3 weeks old.  We will still get super adorable shots of older babies too... but they just aren't as sleepy and it's a lot harder to get all of those adorable newborn poses.  If you are nursing solely it is also pretty important that your milk has come in before we schedule your appointment.  New babies aren't used to all of the moving and positioning and they almost always want to nurse and suck much more frequently then they would normally.

The most important thing...
When the session starts a very sleepy, very full baby makes for the perfect little model.

What do you need for the session?
Lots of diapers and burp cloths... babies make lots of messes ;-).  A pacifier is great.  Even if you aren't planning on using one they can be super handy (just for that day) in soothing your baby into the cutest little poses you've ever seen.  Even babies who normally don't take one will usually suck on one in these circumstances.
Blankets!  I have plenty... but there's nothing like a beautiful photo of your newborn in one of their own blankets.  Blankets with lots of texture are always awesome.  Beautiful afghans, homemade quilts... even a lace table cloth, always bring a personal touch.  Look through your receiving blankets. Stripe's, polka dots and bold colors make for great pictures too.
At one point we will take photos in a basket or on a chair.  I have a number of things to choose from but you are welcome to bring something of your own as well.   We've taken photos with saddles, skateboards, helmets, boots, etc.  Again, I have many hats/flowers to choose from... but I will admit I love when people bring their own.  It ads a uniqueness to the photos and makes them a bit more personal!

What clothes should you bring?
Well, personally, I think a naked baby is the sweetest thing ever.  But not everyone wants to hang that picture on their fridge.  Feel free to bring diaper and cover or a snug fitting solid colored onsie/outfit.  If your doing family pictures or you just really want some fully clothed pictures be careful what you pick for them to wear.  Try to stay away from clothing with small print and always use clothes that fit snugly.  We don't want your baby swimming in their clothes and distracting us from that adorable little face!
You should also bring a solid color (black, tan, white, etc.) shirt for yourself (and spouse if they will be there).  We usually try to take a few with the baby in your hands, arms or up close to your face.  If you don't mind showing some skin a solid camisole or tube top can make for a beautiful artistic photo with you and your baby.
If you will be adding sibling to the photos bring solid colors for them.  If we are taking a standard family photo bring coordinating clothes for the whole family.

What to expect...
We shoot on baby time.  Newborn sessions can take several hours (generally 2-3).  We will stop for feedings, rock them until their happy and patiently wait until they are ready for those perfect shots.  Please feel free to discuss any idea's you have, special shots you would like or a request for more or less of  certain shots.

Newborns are by far my favorite to photograph.  I can't wait to take beautiful pictures for you, that you will cherish forever.
